Proučavanje negacije kao lingvističkog fenomena u bilo kojem jeziku nameće potrebu za nekom vrstom gramatičkog kriterija za identifikaciju negativnih rečenica. U tu se svrhu u engleskom jeziku koristi nekoliko sintaksičkih testova za određivanje polariteta rečenice (tj. da li je rečenica afirmativna ili negativna), kao što su test pozitivne upitne fraze (positive question tag), test not even i test neiher/nor. Primjena ovih testova je samo djelomično moguća u drugim jezicima, što je slučaj i u bosanskom/hrvatskom/srpskom jeziku (u daljem tekstu: b/h/s jezik), zbog specifičnosti kako engleskog, tako i drugih jezika.
