Herman Dalmatin je rođen u središnjoj Istri, u 12. stoljeću. Spominjan je kao Dalmata, Secundus, Sclavus i, u novije doba, De Carinthia. Bio je među prvima koji su prevodili arapska znanstvena djela, i među prvima koji su prevodili islamsku teološku i religijsku literaturu.
