U ovom radu razmatramo kontekste u kojima se javljaju riječi i izrazi negativnog
polariteta u engleskom jeziku. Ukazuje se na činjenicu da određeni NPI izrazi nisu prihvatljivi u svim silazno podrazumijevajućim kontekstima, te se propituje rješenje koje su ponudili pripadnici Groningenske škole negativnog polariteta (Hoeksema 1986, Kas 1993, Zwarts 1996, 1998, van der Wouden 1997).
