U matematičkim primjenama i teorijskim razmatranjima je često lakše, a nekada i neophodno da se kriva zada parametarskim jednačinama.Tako opisane krive su pogodnije za izučavanje. Neke od parametarsih krivih imaju zanimljivu geometrijsku interpretaciju.
